How to cope with the decreasing daylight hours

The worst thing about autumn? The decreasing amount of sunlight.

I suck at the dark mornings and dark evenings. It never feels like I see the sun – leaving the house before 8 and getting home at 16:30. It really affects my mental and physical health, so this year I’m on a mission to make winter a bit more bearable!

Make the most of the daytime

I’m awful for staying indoors with a cup of tea and a book. So I’m going to be making the most of my lunch breaks and weekends by going for walks, having lunch outside/near a window (especially if it’s raining!) and making sure that I get at least half an hour in the daylight each day. I’m not being strict yet, as it’s not going dark until 19:30ish at the moment, but I will be going out and about as much as possible come November!

Keeping healthy

Exercise is great for my mental and physical health, so I’m going to be making a much more concerted effort to getting exercise in my daily routine. One of my goals is to complete a Couch to 5k!

I’m also going to be cutting refined sugar from diet. I’ve done it before and I felt incredible so I can’t wait! It’s so easy to reach for something sugary to get me through day, especially in the office, so it’s going to be tough to cut it out, but I know it’ll be the best thing for me!

Splashing the cash

I’ve always been interested in Lightbox Therapy and I’ve read about people’s transformational experiences by buying one, so I’m going to take the plunge next payday and buy one!

Some are super expensive (I’m talking like £150+) but I’m going to go for this one from at £39.95. If it works, I might upgrade!

Are you affected by the darker days? How do you cope with it? Let me know in the comments!

Couch to 5k is a wonderful app, I started using it recently in my attempt to get back to running regularly.

Having half an hour of daylight each day sounds good. I think it is so important to go outside every day, especially for your physical and mental health. I have started walking to uni(20 mins) rather than getting the tram and I am really enjoying the fresh air and the autumn colours. I have never heard of the SAD light before but I have had a little look and it sounds fab! I really do hate how it gets darker earlier, it makes me feel like the days are so short so I try to get up earlier x

Lack of sun is a huge downside in the winter time for me. I really miss the feeling of sun on my face (although in summer I try to keep my face off sun).

Making the most of daylight is a big one for me, I find just making myself get out of the house everyday can do wonders. Props on cutting out refined sugar, I’m so tempted but it seems so difficult!

I find it doesn’t affect me until after Christmas. But those months of January and February… plus the weather is awful which affects best laid plans. Light box’s for all I think.
