The Christmas Calendar Girls, Samantha Tonge (Tour)

Anyone else on the countdown to Christmas? I’m already looking forward to it – it’ll be the first one in our first house and I’m already itching to get the decorations out.

Thankfully for my boyfriend, my friends over at Aria Fiction hooked me up with a Christmas novel to keep my love at bay.

This is a story about kindness and letting go of the past. It’s about looking out for your neighbours and about making every day feel like Christmas.

The Christmas Calendar Girls

When the food bank in Chesterwood is threatened with closure, Fern knows exactly what she’s going to do to save it: create a living advent calendar, obviously.

So with her best friends, and a new man in town, she sets to work getting the local community to get involved in bringing her idea to life. But as personal secrets are revealed, and internal barriers are broken down, can they save the food bank?

A lighthearted, festive read to get you in the Christmas spirit.

This was SO much fun to read. I laughed (a lot), I cried, and I smiled like an idiot in public whilst reading on the train. What more could you want from a book?

I loved that the supporting characters all had their own well developed story arcs. It made reading so much more interesting to be questioning the reasoning of the others in the plot.

The messages are brilliant.

The book discusses social issues and personal issues in a wonderful way. Homelessness and poverty, as you can imagine, are mentioned heavily and woven into the story beautifully. Addiction, anxiety and grief also feature heavily and are handled delicately and humanly – you really relate to what the characters are going through.

Given that food bank usage across the UK is rising faster than they can cope, it’s an issue that deserves a spotlight.

If you’re in the market for an easy read that will warm your heart in the cold winter days, this is the book for you!
